In Memory of Paul Heapy

Just to say thanks to the guys who took part in climbing the 10 peaks in 10 hours to raise funds in memory of Paul Heapy. These donations enabled us to purchase a new Bladder Scanner for the Renal Transplant Ward at Manchester Royal Infirmary. The guys came along to the Ward this Saturday to handover the machine to the Ward. The guys who took part in the challenge were John Sutcliffe, Jimmy Cullen, Steve Barratt, Colin Hulston, Tom Byrne and Pete Culloden, all pictured here. Well done and thanks for your continued support of the Renal Transplant Ward and you can read more about their adventure challenge in the next edition of Whispers.

Agimol Pradeep voted Best Nurse 2013 by British Malayali

Agimol Pradeep one of our Renal Transplant Coordinators here at the MRI has been voted Best Nurse by the British Malayali (a group for South Indians living in the UK) for her work raising awareness for organ donation in the South Asian Community. Agimol, who is a post-grad PhD student at the University of Salford, aims to tackle the problems by exploring and investigating the views of South Asian people to understand why they are reluctant to become donors.

National figures show that South Asians wait three times longer for a kidney transplant due to the difficulties in finding a successful match.

Throb Lovelace & The Pitts featuring Adele Tribue by Lareena – Saturday, 8th June at Britannia Hotel, Stockport 7.30-12.30pm

Andy the son of one of our renal patients, Frank Powell who passed away before Christmas has offered to give all the proceeds from the Raffle at a Soul Night he is organising in Stockport on the 8th June. It is being held at the Britannia Hotel from 7.30pm til 12.30pm and involves Throb Lovelace and The Pitts with an Adele Tribute by Lareena. There is also a DJ Paul Hazelby spinning the finest Motown, soul and 80’s classics. Happy Hour from 7.30-8.30pm

Styal Golf Club

As most of you already know I have close links with the Renal Department at the MRI. Both of my kidneys failed when I was 20 and received a transplant in 1994. This has allowed me to live a near ordinary lifestyle and given me a second chance of life. However in 2011 I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and underwent six months of successful chemotherapy only to find my kidney function declining. In August last year I commenced dialysis which through the support of the Renal team I self-manage at home. I am now awaiting another transplant.

The whole Renal team at the MRI do a magnificent job, not just the doctors and nurses on the frontline but all the research that takes place in the labs. They are the biggest renal department in the UK and are world leaders with their research and treatments. I for one would not be here today without them!

I will be fund raising through the year and would welcome any ideas, suggestions or donations to help raise some money. Let’s hope we can raise a decent amount by the end of season in October.

Raising money for Kidneys For Life by Playing Golf !

When I was asked to be Lady Captain of Dunham Forest Golf Club in 2012, and to choose a charity for my year, I immediately thought of Kidneys for Life, having worked for 23 years as a Renal Social Worker at Manchester Royal Infirmary. We have begun the year with a talk from Professor Paul Brenchley, about the Charity’s work. I am giving each member a golf ball with the Kidney’s For Life logo on it. We have a Charity Day Competition planned and an Open Day raffle. I have a named charity bunker and those ladies that land in it give a small donation! I hope by the end of my year to have raised money for the MRI Renal Units and to have made members of the Golf Club more aware of renal issues. At the Charity Day, Kath Lawson my former hospital secretary made and donated a fantastic cake (pictured above), with a lady golfer on the top and a Kidneys for Life ribbon made of icing round the base. Kath now runs Kath’s Kates in Didsbury (0161 442 5690) and makes wonderful cakes for all. The cake was raffled and won by Vicky Lewis, a member of our Ladies Section who had a serious illness and been unable to play golf recently. She was thrilled to win the cake, which she kindly shared. Kidneys for Life would just let to say a final thanks to Gail who over the course of her year as Lady Captain at Dunham Forest Golf Club raised £2,070.55 so our appreciation goes out to everyone who helped achieve such a fantastic donation

The Birches in Whitworth

The Birches Hotel held a number of fundraising events in 2012 to help raise funds for the Children’s Transplant Games raising over £1,000 and you can see Helen Kowalawski with Stacey, Debbie & Riley Greenwood presenting the cheque to Irene Chambers
